San Antonio, TX – In a shocking turn of events, Juan Bernardo Cardenas-Ledesma, a Mexican national with a long history of felony convictions, was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents near Val Verde, Texas, and charged with illegal reentry.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Cardenas-Ledesma, who has been deported three times, is accused of re-entering the United States in violation of federal law. His prior convictions include grand theft auto, lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, and hit and run resulting in injury or death.
Cardenas-Ledesma’s case is one of over 240 new immigration and immigration-related cases filed by federal prosecutors in the Western District of Texas from January 30 to February 5. The cases include charges against human smugglers and illegal aliens with past convictions for child sexual assault, violent crimes, DWIs, and multiple prior removals.
Other notable cases include Andres Campos-Martinez, a Mexican national who was detained by ICE after being booked in the Williamson County Jail in November. Campos-Martinez was previously convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child in Travis County and removed to Mexico in September 2020.
Juan Gabriel Amezquita-Fabian, another Mexican national, attempted to enter the U.S. via the pedestrian lane at the Paso Del Norte Port of Entry and allegedly presented a counterfeit State of Texas Birth Certificate. Amezquita-Fabian has been removed from the U.S. three times, the most recent being December 15, 2025, following his fourth DUI conviction.
The cases highlight the ongoing issue of immigration and the need for stricter border control measures. The U.S. Attorney’s office has promised to continue working to protect the community and bring those responsible for these crimes to justice.
In related news, Ronnie Oswaldo Carreon, an El Paso man with five prior convictions, was arrested at the Bridge of the Americas Port of Entry and charged with alien smuggling. A criminal complaint alleges that Carreon claimed he was the sole occupant of a vehicle that belonged to his sister, but an X-ray of the vehicle depicted a person laying down between the back seat and trunk area.
Victor Eduardo De La Fuente, who was previously convicted of conspiracy to transport aliens in 2024, was also charged with alien smuggling after being arrested by USBP agents in El Paso. A criminal complaint alleges that De La Fuente claims to be a U.S. citizen but lives in Juarez and had previously transported 10 illegal aliens for a fee of $100 per alien.
Jesus Emanuel Zendejas-Ovalle and Alberto Guebara-Urbina, both Mexican nationals, were released to ICE Enforcement Removal Operations custody from the Bexar County Jail and Comal County Jail, respectively. Zendejas-Ovalle had been serving a three-year sentence after being convicted of felon in possession of a firearm in 2023, while Guebara-Urbina was encountered at the Comal County Jail on September 1, 2025.
