Monte Derrell Boatman, Sexual Assault, Texas 2023

A Texas man has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman on the grounds of Gateway Arch National Park in 2021.

Monte Derrell Boatman, 44, of St. Louis, Missouri, was arrested in 2022 after the victim reported the assault to authorities. The incident occurred on September 11, 2021, while the victim was visiting the park in Gateway Arch National Park, Missouri.

Boatman, who is currently serving an 84-month sentence for violating his supervised release in a 2009 armed robbery case, will serve the new sentence consecutively. This means he will spend a total of 28 years in prison for the two convictions.

The arrest and subsequent sentence come as a result of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri and the National Park Service’s Investigative Services Branch.

According to court documents, Boatman was convicted of one count of aggravated sexual abuse, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. However, due to the severity of the offense and Boatman’s prior convictions, the court determined a sentence of 28 years was warranted.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting crimes to law enforcement, particularly in areas where visitors may feel vulnerable. National parks, like Gateway Arch National Park, attract millions of visitors each year, and it is essential that authorities take proactive measures to ensure visitor safety.
