Sacramento Man Sentenced to 24 Years in Prison for Online Enticement
A South Sacramento man has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for attempting to lure a minor into a sexual encounter online, the Grimy Times has learned.
Dilesh Sharma, 50, of Sacramento, was sentenced to 24 years in prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release, for his role in the attempted online enticement of a minor for sexual purposes, distribution of child pornography, and receipt of child pornography.
“Today’s sentence is a warning to other online predators,” said U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert. “We are determined to use every legal avenue we have to identify and apprehend these criminals and protect children from harm.”
The FBI and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force conducted an investigation into Sharma’s activities, which began in November 2016. During that time, Sharma used the Craigslist email system and the Kik application to communicate with a person who he believed was an adult, but was actually an undercover law enforcement agent.
Sharma expressed his interest in gaining access to a minor for sexual purposes and eventually suggested that the two meet in person. On March 30, 2017, Sharma arrived at the designated meeting place, where he was arrested by authorities.
A review of Sharma’s iPhone, seized at the time of his arrest, revealed that he had received and distributed child pornography on the Kik application. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Roger Yang and Rosanne Rust as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The investigation and prosecution of Sharma’s case serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting children from online predators. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
