Former DJ Sentenced to 40 Years for Sex Crimes
A former disc jockey who made a living spinning tracks at high school parties has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for sexually exploiting three minors.
Eduardo Santiago-Rivera, 45, met his victims at local high school parties and on social networking sites. He used the internet-based video chat program ‘ooVoo’ to direct and coerce the minors into engaging in sexual acts, which he then recorded.
According to court records, Santiago-Rivera admitted to causing at least three minors, aged 12 to 15, to engage in sexual activity for the purpose of creating videos. He was charged with nine counts of sexual exploitation of children and one count of possession of child pornography.
Santiago-Rivera pleaded guilty to the charges on January 13, 2014, and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jay A. Garcia-Gregory of the District of Puerto Rico. In addition to his prison sentence, Santiago-Rivera was ordered to serve 15 years of supervised release, during which time he will be restricted from accessing computers, the internet, and minors.
The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (ICE HSI) and was prosecuted by the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell, U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodríguez-Vélez, and Special Agent in Charge Angel M. Melendez made the announcement.
The sentencing is part of a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse, known as Project Safe Childhood. The initiative was launched in May 2006 by the U.S. government and aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children online, as well as identify and rescue victims.
Eduardo Santiago-Rivera will also be required to register as a sex offender and pay restitution to the families of the victims within 60 days. The investigation and prosecution of Santiago-Rivera’s case highlight the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation and abuse in the digital age.
