An Akron man, Don A. Maigari, has been sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison for ordering 500 grams of a fentanyl analogue from China.
Maigari, 37, was sentenced to 116 months in prison after pleading guilty to possession with the intent to distribute approximately 500 grams of methoxyacetylfentanyl.
The fentanyl analogue was ordered online from a lab in China. U.S. Postal Inspectors intercepted the package and replaced the contents with a sham product.
Postal inspectors, along with Homeland Security Investigations agents and Akron Police officers, conducted a controlled delivery of the package to Maigari on October 13, 2017, according to court documents.
U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman stated, ‘This case is a great example of how law enforcement works together every day to reduce the flow of these dangerous drugs from hitting our streets. This amount of fentanyl analogue is the same as sending a bomb through the mail.’
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron P. Howell following an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Akron Police Department.
Maigari was found guilty of possession with the intent to distribute approximately 500 grams of methoxyacetylfentanyl in Akron, Ohio. The case highlights the dangers of fentanyl trafficking and the importance of law enforcement collaboration in preventing the flow of these deadly drugs.
