Carlos Chacon, Cocaine Trafficking, Texas 2024

McALLEN, Texas – A brazen drug deal unraveled in South Texas, leading to a guilty plea from 25-year-old Carlos Chacon of Donna. Chacon admitted to supplying a massive quantity of cocaine to a Mexican national, Sergio Ivan Beas Rivera, in May 2024, according to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.

The transaction didn’t stay hidden for long. Authorities were watching when Chacon allegedly handed over the narcotics to Rivera. A subsequent traffic stop revealed the scale of the operation: 31 bundles, meticulously wrapped and concealed, containing approximately 34 kilograms of cocaine. Field tests confirmed the contents, and the haul carries an estimated street value of a staggering $2 million.

Chacon now faces the music. He pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine. Chief U.S. District Judge Randy Crane has set sentencing for September 16th. The young Texan is looking at a potential life sentence in federal prison and a maximum fine of $10 million. For now, he’s been allowed to remain free on bond, a temporary reprieve before the consequences hit.

Rivera, 42, isn’t escaping justice either. He previously entered his own guilty plea, acknowledging his knowledge of the narcotics and his intent to distribute them. He’s currently cooling his heels in custody, awaiting sentencing on August 13th before U.S. District Judge Drew Tipton. The pair clearly thought they could move a fortune in drugs undetected, but law enforcement had other plans.

The bust was the result of a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Hidalgo County Constables Office. The DEA brought the heat, and the local constables provided crucial support. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose A. Garcia is leading the prosecution, determined to secure a hefty penalty for both men.

This case serves as a grim reminder that the flow of illegal drugs across the border continues, and those involved face severe repercussions. While the street value of the cocaine is high, the cost to the community – in addiction, violence, and lost lives – is far greater. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and bring you the latest updates as sentencing approaches.”
