Donovan Chaca, Domestic Violence, Arizona 2017

A brutal case of domestic violence in Arizona has come to a close with Donovan Chaca, 38, of Second Mesa, Ariz., receiving a 90-month sentence. Chaca, a member of the Hopi Tribe, was handed down 67 months of imprisonment by U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow, in addition to the 23 months he had already served on related prosecutions in the Hopi Tribal Court.

The harsh sentence comes as a result of Chaca’s guilty plea to assault resulting in substantial bodily injury to a dating partner and assault by strangling or suffocating a dating partner. The violent crimes occurred on the Hopi Indian Reservation in Hotevilla, Ariz., in August 2014 and January 2015.

Donovan Chaca’s reign of terror left his victims shaken, and it’s a miracle they survived the ordeal. The investigation into Chaca’s crimes was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs-Office of Justice Services (Hopi Agency). Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander Samuels, District of Arizona, Phoenix, handled the prosecution.

The case number for this heinous crime is CR-16-8005-PCT-GMS. The release number is 2017-001_Chaca. This disturbing case serves as a stark reminder that domestic violence will not be tolerated in our society.
