PITTSBURGH, PA – A chilling crime unfolded in downtown Pittsburgh when Matthew Michanowicz, 53, a former resident of Duquesne Heights, pleaded guilty to placing a backpack of unregistered destructive devices in a high-traffic area.
On May 31, 2020, Michanowicz knowingly and unlawfully possessed three destructive devices, which were not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. He admitted to placing the devices in a camouflage backpack at 2 PNC Plaza in downtown Pittsburgh.
The discovery of the unregistered devices sparked a massive investigation involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, and the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office.
Michanowicz, who pleaded guilty before Senior United States District Judge Donetta W. Ambrose, faces a maximum sentence of ten years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 13, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.
Assistant United States Attorney Jessica Lieber Smolar is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. Michanowicz’s actions have left the community shaken, highlighting the importance of stringent gun laws and thorough investigations.
The guilty plea serves as a warning to those who would seek to harm innocent lives with destructive devices. Law enforcement agencies will continue to work tirelessly to ensure public safety and bring those responsible to justice.
As the city of Pittsburgh continues to rebuild and recover, residents can take comfort in knowing that the authorities are dedicated to keeping their communities safe. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the community in preventing and solving crimes.
