Dulce Man Sentenced to 46 Months for Habitual Domestic Violence

A Dulce man has been sentenced to 46 months in prison after pleading guilty to domestic assault by a habitual offender and assault by an intimate partner by strangling, suffocating or attempting to strangle or suffocate.

According to court documents, Matthew Vicenti, 34, an enrolled member of the Jicarilla Apache Tribe, assaulted the mother of his two children over two days at his Dulce home on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation in December 2021.

Vicenti slapped, pushed, punched and strangled the victim, breaking her phone and taking her shoes to prevent her from leaving. When police arrived, Vicenti turned off lights, cut the WiFi and covered the victim’s mouth, and choked her, causing bruising to her throat. Vicenti was on probation at the time and was concerned about getting in trouble.

The Jicarilla Apache Police Department investigated this case, and Assistant United States Attorney Kimberly Bell is prosecuting the case.

U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez made the announcement today, stating that Vicenti will be required to serve three years of supervised release after completing his term of imprisonment.

There is no parole in the federal system, and Vicenti will face the full consequences of his actions. This sentence serves as a reminder that domestic violence will not be tolerated, and those who commit such crimes will be held accountable.

The victim in this case is a mother of two who was subjected to unimaginable abuse at the hands of her partner. This sentence brings some measure of justice, but it does not undo the harm that has been done.

The Grimy Times will continue to shed light on cases like this, holding perpetrators accountable and working to prevent such crimes from happening in the future.
