PEORIA, Ill. – The grim specter of child exploitation was once again illuminated in court when Michael Dean Dupoy, 53, from Peoria, Illinois, was sentenced to a staggering 240 months’ imprisonment for possession of child pornography. This sentence comes after Dupoy, who had already been serving a term of supervised release following a previous conviction for receipt of child porn, violated that release by possessing prohibited materials.
U.S. District Judge Jonathan E. Hawley presided over the sentencing hearing on August 20, 2025. The court heard arguments regarding Dupoy’s extensive criminal history, including his 2008 conviction for receiving child pornography, which landed him a sentence of 220 months’ imprisonment followed by a lifetime term of supervised release.
In December 2024, a U.S. Probation Officer found that Dupoy was in possession of a SanDisk Model 512GB Micro SD card containing 482 images and 58 videos of child sexual abuse. The officer also discovered an unmonitored cellular phone at Dupoy’s residence, which was against the terms of his release. Further investigation revealed photos of children at the store where Dupoy worked.
Dupoy was arrested for violating his supervised release in December 2024 and charged with possession of child pornography in February 2025. He pleaded guilty in April 2025 and has been in custody since.
Judge Hawley emphasized the need to protect the public, stating that Dupoy’s criminal behavior began almost immediately upon his release from prison. The judge concluded that removal from society was necessary for public safety. The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The investigation into this despicable crime was conducted by the United States Probation Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Springfield Field Office. Criminal Chief Darilynn J. Knauss represented the government in the prosecution.
