Jury Convicts Jacksonville Man of Illegally Possessing a Loaded Firearm
Jacksonville, FL – A federal jury has delivered a guilty verdict against Dwayne Eric Thompson, a 39-year-old Jacksonville resident, for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
According to evidence presented at trial, Thompson was arrested by officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office after a search of his vehicle uncovered a loaded pistol in the center console. Initially, Thompson and his passengers denied any knowledge or ownership of the firearm. However, DNA evidence later revealed that Thompson’s DNA was present on the firearm and the loaded magazine.
This is not Thompson’s first run-in with the law. He has multiple prior felony convictions and was on federal supervised release at the time of his arrest, having previously been convicted by a federal trial jury in 2010 of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
As a convicted felon, Thompson is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law. The maximum penalty for this offense is 15 years’ imprisonment, although a sentencing date has not yet been set.
The investigation into this case was conducted by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Assistant United States Attorney John Cannizzaro is handling the prosecution, with Assistant United States Attorney Mai Tran handling the forfeiture.
This case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.
The PSN program was launched in May 2021, with a focus on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results of these efforts.
