GRAINY TIMES EXCLUSIVE
A 26-year-old Eagle Butte man has been sentenced to serve time for possession of a controlled substance.
Jason Garreau, 26, of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on May 3, 2013, and pled guilty to a Superseding Information that charged him with Possession of a Controlled Substance.
According to court documents, Garreau was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 15, 2013, for Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute. The charge stems from an incident on September 13, 2012, when Garreau was stopped in his vehicle by Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe law enforcement officers for speeding.
During the stop, while Garreau was out of his vehicle, he dropped a clear bag from his pocket that held smaller bags containing a crystal-like substance. The substance was taken to the lab for analysis and tested positive for methamphetamine, with a total weight of 1.8 grams.
The investigation was conducted by Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case.
Garreau was sentenced to time served with no supervised release to follow, a $1,000 fine, and a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
This case is a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle with methamphetamine in our community. The Grimy Times will continue to bring you updates on this and other cases as they develop.
