Eagle Butte, SD – A grim federal charge sheet has been leveled at Braxtyn Melecca Jo Garreau, a 21-year-old resident of Eagle Butte, South Dakota. The United States Attorney Randolph J. Seiler announced that Garreau was indicted by a federal grand jury on serious methamphetamine charges.
Garreau, accused of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance, Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, and Concealing a Person from Arrest, stands accused of her alleged crimes between January 2014 and April 2017. The indictment states that she conspired with others to distribute meth within South Dakota’s district, possessed the drug with intent to sell on February 23, 2017, and harbored Emmett Traversie to prevent his arrest.
Should she be convicted, Garreau faces up to 20 years in prison for conspiracy and possession charges, plus a $1,000,000 fine. The concealment charge could land her an additional five years behind bars with a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release after. Her court appearance on April 21st saw her enter a not guilty plea.
The investigation into Garreau’s activities was a collaborative effort by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services Narcotics Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney SaraBeth Donovan is now handling the prosecution.
Despite her current status as an accused party, Garreau is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. She remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, with no date set for her day in court.
