Carlos Santiago, Fentanyl Trafficking, New Jersey 2024

Newark, N.J. – The grim streets of Essex County, New Jersey, witnessed a pivotal moment today as Carlos Santiago, 49, from East Orange, admitted to his role as a drug trafficking kingpin during a court appearance in Newark federal court.

Santiago pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz to possession with intent to distribute over five kilograms of fentanyl and four kilograms of cocaine, along with the unlawful possession of six firearms, despite being a convicted felon.

According to law enforcement documents and statements made in court, Santiago’s reign of terror began on October 24, 2022. Agents found him moving his deadly cargo from a storage unit to his vehicle in Newark. His cache included over five kilograms of fentanyl and cocaine, as well as one firearm. A subsequent search of his East Orange residence unearthed additional fentanyl and cocaine, along with five more firearms.

Santiago’s previous conviction for a drug offense and resisting arrest in New Jersey Superior Court, Essex County, only bolstered his status as a hardened criminal. Now, he faces the consequences of his actions. The distribution of 400 grams or more of fentanyl carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, with a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and a $10 million fine. Distribution of 500 grams or more of cocaine could result in five to 40 years behind bars and a $5 million fine. Possession of firearms by a convicted felon carries a maximum term of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger credited the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) for their diligent efforts that led to Santiago’s guilty plea. Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn Barnes will represent the government in this case, which is scheduled for sentencing on September 5, 2024.

The grim saga of Carlos Santiago serves as a stark reminder of the relentless fight against drug trafficking and illegal firearms possession that law enforcement agencies across New Jersey are committed to. Santiago’s fate is now sealed, but his legacy as a drug kingpin will not be forgotten.
