East St. Louis Man Sentenced for Cocaine and Heroin Distribution
A 27-year-old East St. Louis man has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for his role in a cocaine and heroin distribution ring, according to a recent federal court ruling.
Troy Edwards, a resident of East St. Louis, Illinois, was found guilty of brokering the sale of cocaine and heroin to a confidential informant on January 25, 2013, in East St. Louis. The informant was acting under the direction of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents at the time of the transaction.
According to court documents, Edwards was sentenced on August 14, 2015, in federal district court to a term of 18 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, a fine of $150, and a special assessment of $100. The sentence was handed down by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton.
The case against Edwards was investigated by the DEA and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel T. Kapsak. The successful prosecution of Edwards is a significant blow to those involved in the sale of illegal narcotics in the East St. Louis area.
The sentence handed down against Edwards serves as a reminder that those who engage in the sale of cocaine and heroin will face severe consequences. The DEA and its law enforcement partners will continue to work tirelessly to dismantle the networks of those who seek to profit from the sale of these deadly substances.
As the city of East St. Louis continues to grapple with the consequences of the opioid epidemic, the successful prosecution of Edwards is a step in the right direction. It is our hope that this sentence will serve as a deterrent to those who would seek to engage in similar activities in the future.
The investigation and prosecution of Edwards are a testament to the hard work and dedication of the DEA and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois. We are proud to have played a role in bringing this individual to justice and look forward to continuing our work in the fight against narcotics trafficking.
