Pennsylvania Man Sentenced for Stolen Identity Refund Fraud Scheme
A Georgia man has been sentenced in federal court to probation for a term of five years and restitution ordered in the amount of $139,357.27 on his conviction of wire fraud conspiracy, announced United States Attorney David J. Hickton today.
United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer imposed the sentence on Edward Claude Hammitt, 67, of Summerville, GA.
In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that Hammitt and others conspired to steal identities of other persons which were used to file false electronic federal tax returns between 2010 and 2012.
Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
U.S. Attorney Hickton commended the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation for the successful prosecution of Hammitt.
Hammitt’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of committing white-collar crimes in Western Pennsylvania. The case highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the courts in bringing perpetrators to justice.
