In Clarksburg, West Virginia, a two-day training is being held to further the Department of Justice’s Elder Justice Initiative, targeting those who prey on older Americans for financial gain. The training, called West Virginia SAFE, is designed for elder justice professionals to gain skills in communicating with older adults who are alleged victims of crime. US Attorneys Matthew L. Harvey and Moore Capito are partnering with Modell Consulting to provide this training, which will be attended by law enforcement partners, federal and state prosecutors, and social workers.
The training will focus on skills development, including considerations for age-related declines in cognition, underlying neuropathology, language capacity, and cultural background. This will strengthen forensic interviewing and help identify and prosecute elder abuse crimes. US Attorney Matthew Harvey stated that those who target older Americans for financial gain should be on notice, as they will use every tool available to investigate and prosecute these crimes.
US Attorney Moore Capito emphasized that elder abuse is a coward’s crime, preying on those least able to fight back, and that the training matters as it sharpens their ability to spot, stop, and hold offenders accountable. AARP is a limited sponsor of the event, and each participant will gain education credits within their field.
The partnership between the US Attorney’s Offices and local stakeholders demonstrates a commitment to combating elder abuse and ensuring that seniors in West Virginia are protected from financial exploitation. By providing training and resources, they aim to prevent and prosecute elder abuse crimes, making it clear that exploitation of the elderly will not be tolerated in their communities.
