Former Correctional Officer Sentenced for Sex Abuse of Inmate

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A former correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Institution Hazelton’s Female Facility has been sentenced to three months of incarceration for the sexual abuse of an inmate.

Scott Douglas Born, 33, of Bruceton Mills, West Virginia, admitted to accepting oral sex from an inmate at the secure female facility from September 2018 to January 2019. Born, a former correctional officer, pled guilty in February 2021 to one count of “Sexual Abuse of a Ward.”

The abuse occurred while Born was still employed at the facility, where he was tasked with ensuring the safety and well-being of the inmates. Instead, he exploited his position of power to engage in the deplorable behavior.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon S. Flower prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The Office of Inspector General investigated the allegations.

U.S. District Judge Thomas S. Kleeh presided over the sentencing, handing down the three-month sentence for Born’s crimes.

The sentencing is a small measure of justice for the victim, who was subjected to Born’s abuse while in custody. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding those in positions of power accountable for their actions.

Born’s sentence is a cautionary tale for those who would seek to exploit their positions for personal gain.
