On March 22, 2019, Berbel applied for a passport in Laredo, Texas, including information that belonged to the victim. She admitted to including the victim’s Social Security number, parents’ names, place of birth, and other personal details in her application.
The investigation, conducted by the Department of State with assistance from the Social Security Administration and the Texas Department of Public Safety, revealed that Berbel had been stopped at the Laredo Port of Entry in August 2005, carrying multiple forms of identification, including a Social Security card with the victim’s number.
As part of her guilty plea, Berbel agreed to turn over all identification documents in her possession. She faces up to 10 years in prison for passport fraud and a mandatory two years for aggravated identity theft, to be served consecutively.
U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo will impose the sentence on December 4. Berbel has been in custody pending sentencing.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Bajew.
