Palm Beach Resident Sentenced for Defrauding Cystic Fibrosis Nonprofit

A West Palm Beach federal district judge has handed down a harsh sentence to 34-year-old Elizabeth Genna Suarez, formerly known as Elizabeth Mirson Suit. Suarez was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release, for her role in a scheme to defraud Piper’s Angels Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with cystic fibrosis and their families.

Between August 2018 and November 2019, Suarez used her position as the wife of the foundation’s executive director to divert funds to herself. She used the foundation’s corporate credit card to make several unauthorized purchases, including an $8,000 deposit on a cosmetic surgical procedure, a $1,680 payment for a cosmetic laser procedure, and an $800 expenditure on a necklace.

The scheme came to light after Suarez was found guilty of wire fraud by a jury. In a subsequent ruling, the trial judge determined that Suarez had lied on the stand and submitted fake character letters to the court. These actions served as further evidence of Suarez’s culpability in the case.

U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida and Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey B. Veltri of the FBI’s Miami Field Office announced the sentence imposed by U.S. District Judge Donald M. Middlebrooks. The FBI’s Miami office conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexandra Chase prosecuting the case and Assistant U.S. Attorney G. Raemy Charest-Turken handling asset forfeiture.

The case is a stark reminder of the importance of accountability in the nonprofit sector. Piper’s Angels Foundation, Inc. was established to support individuals with cystic fibrosis and their families, and Suarez’s actions undermined the trust that donors and supporters have placed in the organization.
