Machinegun Possessor Sentenced to 41 Months in Prison

SOUTH BEND – A 29-year-old man from Elkhart, Indiana has been sentenced for possessing machineguns. Joshua Ray was sentenced to 41 months in prison and 2 years of supervised release.

According to court documents, Ray pleaded guilty to possessing auto switch (sear) devices that could convert semi-automatic pistols into fully automatic weapons. In May 2019, law enforcement intercepted a package containing 40 auto switch devices bound for Ray’s address.

Later that month, a search at Ray’s home yielded four auto switch devices, three rifles, a shotgun, and two handguns. The discovery was the result of an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Schultz handled the case. The guilty plea and subsequent sentencing are a significant blow to those involved in the illicit trade of machineguns.

Ray’s sentence reflects the severity of his crime and the potential harm that auto switch devices can cause in the wrong hands. This conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of strict gun control laws and the work of law enforcement agencies in keeping our communities safe.

The case is a testament to the dedication of investigators and prosecutors in bringing those who break the law to justice. With convictions like this, our communities are safer and our streets are a little bit cleaner.
