ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA – Jason Randall Howard, 38, a resident of Elkins, has been hit with a guilty plea for illegal firearm possession. The charges stem from an incident where Howard was caught with a 9mm pistol in Randolph County, West Virginia, in August 2016.
Howard’s conviction on the charge of “Unlawful Possession of a Firearm” comes after he had already been found guilty of Domestic Battery in the same county. The severity of his current offense could land him up to ten years behind bars and a monetary fine reaching $250,000. According to the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence will be determined by the nature of the offenses and any prior criminal history.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen D. Warner led the prosecution for the government, with the Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force and the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office handling the investigation. The case was presided over by U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi.
This is a stark reminder of the continuing battle against illegal firearms in West Virginia, where law enforcement agencies are relentless in their pursuit of justice. Howard now faces the consequences of his actions, which have not only endangered himself but also his community.
The incident serves as a cautionary tale for others considering the possession of illegal firearms. With the potential sentence looming, it underscores the serious nature of such offenses and the harsh penalties imposed by the federal justice system.
As the investigation and prosecution of this case continue to unfold, it will be interesting to see how the court ultimately decides Howard’s fate. The outcome is expected to have far-reaching implications for gun control in West Virginia and beyond.
