A violent crime has shaken the streets of Elmwood, Louisiana, as Jaequan Bailey, 26, was charged with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition. According to a three-count indictment, Bailey possessed firearms and ammunition on April 19, 2022, September 26, 2024, and November 26, 2024.
As a convicted felon, Bailey was prohibited from possessing firearms, making his actions a federal offense. The indictment charges Bailey with violating Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8). If convicted, Bailey faces up to 15 years imprisonment, up to a $250,000 fine, and up to 3 years of supervised release for each of the three counts.
Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson emphasized that the indictment is merely a charge and that Bailey’s guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating violent crime and protecting communities.
The New Orleans Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations led the investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney Troy L. Bell from the Violent Crimes Unit handling the prosecution. This case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and hold perpetrators accountable.
As part of the indictment, Bailey is required to pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee for each count. The total potential fine for the three counts could reach $750,000, making this a serious charge with significant consequences if Bailey is convicted.
The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to keeping communities safe and holding those who break the law accountable. As the case moves forward, Bailey’s fate will be determined in a court of law, where the evidence will be presented, and the verdict will be rendered.
Operation Take Back America aims to marshal the full resources of the Department of Justice to combat violent crime and protect communities. This case is a prime example of the initiative’s impact and the dedication of law enforcement agencies to making our communities safer.
