ALBUQUERQUE – A federal jury convicted Emmanuel Barraza-Ramirez, a Mexican national with five prior deportations, of illegal reentry into the United States following a swift trial that lasted just one day. Ramirez, 44, was caught hiding in bushes near the U.S./Mexico border by Border Patrol agents on February 15, 2024. Court records and evidence presented at trial reveal that Ramirez had been removed from the US five times before and faced three prior convictions for illegal reentry.
Upon his arrest, Ramirez admitted to being present in the U.S. illegally. He was processed at the Santa Teresa Station, where agents discovered his extensive immigration history. The jury took just 13 minutes to reach a verdict against Ramirez, who now faces up to 20 years in federal prison without parole.
U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar of the U.S. Border Patrol El Paso Sector announced the conviction today. Assistant United States Attorneys Mark Saltman and Jackson K. Dering V handled the prosecution of this case, which was investigated by the U.S. Border Patrol.
Following the verdict, Ramirez was ordered to remain in custody pending sentencing, which has yet to be scheduled. The severity of his sentence underscores the federal government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal immigration and repeated attempts at reentry into the country.
This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who attempt to evade U.S. immigration laws, especially for repeat offenders like Ramirez. His case is another example of the rigorous enforcement efforts by federal agencies to secure the nation’s borders and uphold the rule of law.
