Felon in Possession of a Firearm Lands Charleston Man Up to 10 Years in Prison
A Charleston man has admitted to pawning a stolen firearm, a derringer pistol, at a local pawn shop. Emmanuel Lamont Covington, 30, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm in a federal court.
According to the plea agreement, Covington pawned the firearm to pay his bills. He also admitted to knowing that he was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his prior felony conviction. Covington was convicted of a felony drug conspiracy in 2016.
United States Attorney William S. Thompson praised the work of the Charleston Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in investigating the case. Assistant United States Attorney Julie M. White is handling the prosecution.
On February 17, 2022, Covington is set to be sentenced. He faces up to 10 years in prison for his crime.
The case highlights the ongoing issue of firearm possession by felons in the state. The West Virginia authorities are working to prevent such crimes from happening in the future.
