Drug Trafficking Bust Lands Montana Man Behind Bars

Billings, Montana

A Montana man has been sentenced to prison for his role in a large-scale drug trafficking operation. Eric Charles Swan, 35, of Wolf Point, was sentenced to eight years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release.

The sentence comes after Swan pleaded guilty in March to possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. This charge is a serious offense, and Swan’s sentence reflects the severity of his crime.

According to court documents, law enforcement began investigating Swan in 2021 after receiving information about possible drug trafficking. In November, agents observed Swan traveling to Denver and returning to Montana. A traffic stop near Buffalo, Wyoming, revealed a stash of fentanyl pills in Swan’s clothing and a large quantity of the substance in the vehicle.

The investigation, led by the Eastern Montana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force, uncovered a staggering amount of illicit substances, including over 9,000 fentanyl pills, one pound of heroin, 103 grams of methamphetamine, and $9,775 in cash.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas K. Godfrey prosecuted the case, which is part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative to reduce violent crime. This program focuses on violent crime driven by methamphetamine trafficking, armed robbery, firearms offenses, and violent offenders with outstanding warrants.

Swan’s co-defendant, Elizabeth Ardell Grace Ronshaugen, 30, of Great Falls, received a four-year prison sentence in June for her role in the operation.

With this sentence, justice has been served for the victims of Eric Charles Swan’s crimes. His prison term serves as a reminder of the consequences of drug trafficking and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to combat this issue.
