Eric J. Louis, Jr. Assault by Striking, New Mexico 2013

ALBUQUERQUE – In a shocking turn of events, Eric J. Louis, Jr., 35, a member and resident of Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico, was sentenced to a two-year term of probation for his misdemeanor assault conviction. Louis was arrested in August 2013, on a criminal complaint alleging that he assaulted an officer of the Acoma Pueblo Tribal Police Department who responded to a domestic violence call at a residence within Acoma Pueblo.

When the officer attempted to arrest Louis for disorderly conduct and intoxication, Louis assaulted the officer by wrestling with the officer and attempting to get the officer’s taser. Louis was subsequently indicted on September 10, 2013, and charged with committing an assault with a dangerous weapon on August 14, 2013, in Cibola County, New Mexico.

On August 8, 2014, Louis entered a guilty plea to a misdemeanor information charging him with assault by striking, beating or wounding, and admitted that he assaulted a tribal officer by striking him. The case was investigated by the Laguna Agency of the BIA’s Office of Justice Services and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle T. Nayback.

The facts of the case are disturbing, and the community is left wondering how such a violent act could take place. According to eyewitnesses, Louis was intoxicated and became aggressive when confronted by the officer. The officer attempted to de-escalate the situation, but Louis resisted arrest, leading to a physical altercation.

Louis’s sentence is a significant step towards justice, but it also raises questions about the effectiveness of our justice system. Can we do more to prevent such violent acts from occurring in the first place? The Grimy Times will continue to investigate and report on this case as more information becomes available.

In the meantime, the community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The safety of our residents is paramount, and we must work together to prevent such crimes from happening again.

The case serves as a reminder that violence and aggression will not be tolerated in our community. We must stand together and support our law enforcement agencies in their efforts to keep our streets safe.
