Ethan Thomas Trainor, Tax Evasion, Florida 2023
MIAMI, FL – In a shocking turn of events, South Florida resident Ethan Thomas Trainor has pled guilty to attempted tax evasion, concealing over $1 million in cryptocurrency earnings from the IRS.
According to court documents, Trainor used sophisticated online techniques to conceal his cryptocurrency earnings from the IRS. From 2014 to 2017, Trainor earned over $1 million in cryptocurrency through dark web transactions, but failed to report it as income.
The defendant used services and techniques designed to conceal his identity, including ‘mixers’ that pool together cryptocurrency transactions and distribute ‘clean’ cryptocurrency to users’ virtual wallets. This made it difficult for the IRS to determine the identity of those dealing in the cryptocurrency.
Trainor is scheduled to be sentenced in December, where he faces up to five years in federal prison. The defendant’s conviction is a significant blow to those who think they can evade taxes by using cryptocurrency.
The investigation into Trainor’s activities was carried out by the IRS-CI Miami, DEA Miami, FBI Miami, HSI Miami, and USPIS Miami. Assistant U.S. Attorney Monique Botero is prosecuting the case.
This case is part of Operation TORnado, a result of the ongoing efforts by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF). The OCDETF program aims to identify, disrupt, and dismantle the highest-level drug traffickers, money launderers, and other priority transnational criminal organizations that threaten the citizens of the United States.
