Eugene Dawson, Gun Trafficking and Cocaine Distribution, Michigan 2023

MICHIGAN CITY, IN – Eugene Dawson, 42, is headed to federal prison for 84 months after admitting to brokering an illegal gun sale and peddling cocaine, a deal that also put children at risk. U.S. District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty handed down the sentence Wednesday, following Dawson’s guilty plea.

The feds say Dawson wasn’t just moving firearms; he was mixing drugs into the deal. Between January and February of 2023, he allegedly sold a 9mm handgun for $650, all while simultaneously supplying the buyer with cocaine. The transactions didn’t stop there. Investigators uncovered two additional drug deals tied to Dawson during the same period.

But the danger didn’t end with the streets. A search of Dawson’s Michigan City home revealed more than just leftover drugs. Authorities found additional cocaine and marijuana stored in a location easily accessible to children who resided there, adding a disturbing layer to the case. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) spearheaded the investigation, with crucial support from local law enforcement in Michigan City, LaPorte County, and LaPorte City.

Dawson’s criminal history sealed his fate. He was previously convicted of selling cocaine in LaPorte County Superior Court, a felony conviction that legally barred him from owning a firearm. The prosecution, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Katelan M. Doyle, successfully argued that Dawson knowingly violated this restriction.

Federal officials are framing the case as a win for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program designed to combat violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The Department of Justice launched a renewed PSN strategy in 2021, focusing on building trust, supporting community organizations, and prioritizing strategic enforcement.

Following his 84-month prison sentence, Dawson will face an additional three years of supervised release. This case underscores the federal government’s commitment to cracking down on illegal gun trafficking and drug dealing, especially when it involves endangering vulnerable populations like children. The investigation continues to probe possible connections to other criminal activities in the region.
