EVANSVILLE – The grim tale of Jacilynn Holifield’s fentanyl overdose death has culminated in the arrest of local dealer Kalib Scott Powell, 25.
The United States Attorney for Indiana, Josh J. Minkler, announced today that Powell faces charges for distributing a Schedule One Controlled Substance (Fentanyl), Resulting in Death.
Holifield, 22, died on February 24, 2019, following the use of fentanyl powder she purchased from Powell, according to the federal complaint. The investigation, led by various law enforcement agencies including DEA and Evansville Police Department, revealed that Holifield had used the drug up to her death.
Minkler emphasized the Justice Department’s commitment to combating such tragedies, highlighting education and outreach as part of their strategy. ‘Evansville residents are at risk,’ Minkler warned. ‘Drug traffickers like Powell will face justice swiftly.’
DEA Special Agent in Charge Brian M. McKnight highlighted the collaboration between federal and local law enforcement in the arrest of Powell, who was selling deadly fentanyl to addicts. McKnight’s message to would-be dealers was clear: ‘DEA will arrest you!’ His warning also extended to drug cartels in Mexico.
Tara Sullivan of IRS Criminal Investigation emphasized the agency’s role in disrupting criminal organizations’ finances, working alongside OCDETF partners to dismantle illegal drug operations. Assistant Chief of Police Chris Pugh praised the cooperative efforts between local and federal agencies in this case.
Assistant United States Attorney Frank E. Dahl, III, noted the gravity of the charges against Powell, who faces 20 years to life if convicted. The case underscores the Department’s focus on addressing public safety challenges within the District.
