HONOLULU – A major scandal has erupted at the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility as two department employees have been indicted for a colossal lie about a jet fuel spill. John Floyd, 63, of Mililani, and Nelson Wu, 38, from Waipahu, are facing charges after it was revealed they concealed the true extent of a massive spill that occurred on May 6, 2021.
According to authorities, Floyd and Wu, who were employed as Deputy Director and Supervisory Engineer respectively at the United States Navy’s Fuels Department, falsely stated that only 1,618 gallons of jet fuel spilled during an attempted transfer. However, they knew full well that the actual spill was a staggering 20,000 gallons.
This deception came in response to a request for information (RFI) issued by the Hawaii Department of Health, which regulates Red Hill under the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority. The pair is accused of deliberately providing false information and omitting crucial records from their response on October 1, 2021.
Should Floyd and Wu be convicted of these charges, they face a daunting sentence of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each count. The charges against them are serious accusations, but they remain innocent until proven guilty.
The investigation into this matter has been a collaborative effort by the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, EPA Criminal Investigation Division, and EPA Office of the Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig S. Nolan is leading the prosecution.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences when public trust is betrayed, and it underscores the commitment of law enforcement to uncover truth and justice.
