CONCORD, NH – Joseph Baran, 55, of Derry, New Hampshire, is facing federal charges after being indicted for the distribution and possession of horrific child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The indictment, announced by U.S. Attorney Erin Creegan, details Baran’s involvement in a clandestine, technically advanced online group dedicated to the collection and dissemination of this vile content.
Baran was initially arrested and charged via criminal complaint before appearing in federal court on August 21, 2025. Details revealed in court documents paint a disturbing picture of a network operating in the shadows, utilizing sophisticated methods to avoid detection while actively contributing to the exploitation of vulnerable children.
The investigation, spearheaded by the FBI’s Headquarters-based Child Exploitation Operational Unit and bolstered by the FBI’s Boston Field Office, uncovered evidence linking Baran to the widespread sharing of CSAM. Sources within the investigation describe the operation as a meticulously organized effort, making apprehension all the more critical. The scale of the network suggests numerous other participants are still at large.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Vicinanzo is leading the prosecution, with crucial support from Trial Attorney Kaylynn Foulon of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section. This collaboration demonstrates the federal government’s unwavering commitment to dismantling these networks and bringing perpetrators to justice.
This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project aims to not only prosecute offenders but also to locate and rescue victims, offering them a path towards healing and recovery. The DOJ is marshaling resources at every level to dismantle these rings.
