New Orleans, Louisiana – A Honduran national is facing serious federal charges for allegedly reentering the United States after being deported.
Evin Enrique Funez Cruz, 22, was charged in a bill of information on January 15, 2025, for reentry of a removed alien, in violation of Title 8, United States Code, Sections 1326(a) and (b)(1).
According to court documents, Funez Cruz was apprehended in St. Tammany Parish on or around January 6, 2025. He had been previously deported to Honduras on June 21, 2024, indicating he re-entered the country illegally.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced the charges, stating that a bill of information is merely a charge and the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
Funez Cruz faces a maximum penalty of ten years of imprisonment, up to a $250,000 fine, up to three years of supervised release, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee, if convicted.
Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis of the General Crimes Unit oversees the prosecution.
The case is an example of the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat illegal immigration and re-entry into the country.
