John A. Panchalk, Grenade Possession, Missouri 2024

CRIME NEWS: Kansas City, Kan. – A rogue ex-Army explosive ordnance disposal technician has pleaded guilty to the illegal possession of military-grade explosives, including two M-67 fragmentation grenades. The revelation comes after a federal investigation into the storage facility in Parkville, Mo., where authorities stumbled upon a cache of ammunition and incendiary devices.

John A. Panchalk, 42, from Overland Park, Kan., admitted to owning the trailer that housed the arsenal. His evasiveness during police inquiries at his home led to a search warrant that uncovered 38 pounds of C-4 explosive, military-grade detonation cord, and numerous grenade simulators.

The investigation began in May when vandals targeted several trailers at the Parkville Self Storage Facility. Panchalk’s possession of unregistered explosives is in stark contrast to his former role as an Army EOD tech. Sentencing has been delayed, but the government anticipates recommending probation.

U.S. Attorney Tom Beall credited the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), FBI, Parkville Police Department, Overland Park Police Department, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Terra Morehead for their diligent work on this case.

Panchalk’s conviction comes amidst growing concerns about the potential misuse of military-grade weaponry by former service members. The public is reminded of the dangers associated with unregistered explosives and the importance of compliance with federal firearms laws.
