Howard M. Saal, Child Pornography Possession, Ohio 2024

CINCINNATI – A former doctor at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is facing federal charges in a sickening case of child pornography. Howard M. Saal, 73, of Cincinnati, appeared in federal court today, accused of transporting and possessing a massive trove of depraved material.

Saal, previously employed as a geneticist and dysmorphologist at the respected children’s hospital, is at the center of an investigation that began with a cyber tip. A Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office detective, working with the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force, flagged image searches originating from Saal’s IP address. The initial search depicted two naked females, approximately 10 years old, engaged in sexual conduct – a starting point that quickly spiraled into a horrifying discovery.

The FBI has, to date, identified over 153,000 images and 470 videos of child sexual abuse material on Saal’s electronic devices. The content isn’t limited to older children; some of the pornography depicts victims as young as newborns. Investigators emphasize, however, that they have found no evidence linking the crimes to patients or children associated with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, though the proximity is deeply disturbing.

“I am incredibly proud of the work of our Regional Electronics and Computer Investigations unit and their diligence in investigating this individual,” stated Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey. “We encourage anyone who thinks they may be a victim of Dr. Saal to contact our detectives. We will continue to seek out dangerous individuals and bring justice to victims’ families.” The Sheriff’s office is urging anyone with information to come forward, a chilling reminder of the potential scope of Saal’s depravity.

FBI Cincinnati Special Agent in Charge Elena Iatarola echoed the sentiment, stating, “The FBI and our partners will continue to fiercely investigate those who attempt to sexually exploit children.” She also praised the collaboration with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, highlighting the importance of interagency cooperation in combating such heinous crimes. This wasn’t a solo operation; it was a coordinated takedown.

Transporting child pornography is a federal crime carrying a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 20 years. Possession of such material carries a potential maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison. The charges were announced by Dominick S. Gerace II, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio; Elena Iatarola, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Cincinnati Division; Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey; and Assistant United States Attorney Danielle E. Margeaux. It’s crucial to remember that a criminal complaint contains allegations only, and Saal is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But the evidence already uncovered paints a grim picture.
