Medina Man Sentenced To 14 Years For Child Pornography Crimes

MEDINA, OH – Richard J. Miezin, 48, of Medina, Ohio, will spend the next 14 years behind bars after being sentenced today for a litany of crimes related to the distribution and possession of child pornography. The sentence, handed down by a federal judge, underscores the severity of the offenses and the commitment of law enforcement to protecting vulnerable children.

Miezin was found guilty of receiving, distributing, and possessing visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Court documents detail how, between April 27, 2010, and February 25, 2011, Miezin knowingly used a computer to distribute numerous files containing images of real minors subjected to sexual abuse. He also lied to investigators during the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s probe, further compounding his crimes.

“This sentence should send a message to those who would victimize children,” stated Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, in a press release issued today. The statement highlights the Justice Department’s unwavering stance against those who exploit and abuse children, particularly in the digital realm.

Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Cleveland Office, echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the repeated harm inflicted upon victims of child pornography. “Individuals like Richard Miezin, who choose to engage in such despicable behavior, will be brought to justice,” Anthony said. The FBI continues to prioritize investigations into online child exploitation, working tirelessly to identify and apprehend perpetrators.

Medina County Sheriff Tom Miller added, “Protecting our children from this type of exploitation is one of my highest priorities.” Miller reaffirmed his commitment to combating those who prey on the innocent, vowing continued collaboration with federal agencies to address this critical issue. The case was a joint effort between the Medina County Sheriff’s Office and the Akron Office of the FBI’s Crimes Against Children Task Force.

This sentencing marks a victory for the newly established task force, which aims to utilize all available resources – investigative, technical, and community-based – to shield children from harm. Assistant United States Attorney Carol M. Skutnik prosecuted the case. The task force is focused on aggressively targeting child predators and dismantling networks involved in the production and distribution of child sexual abuse material. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this and other federal investigations impacting Ohio communities.
