Ex-Con Sentenced for Stash of Guns
Kenneth Jones, 23, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, has been sentenced to 38 months of incarceration by U.S. District Court Judge Sarah S. Vance for violating federal gun laws. Jones pleaded guilty to two counts of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm. In addition to his prison sentence, Jones received three years of supervised release and a $200 special assessment.
The charges against Jones stemmed from two separate incidents in 2011. On August 24, 2011, Jones was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by New Orleans Police Officers for a routine traffic violation. During the police encounter, Jones was found to be in possession of a Glock, model 36, .45 caliber pistol.
Later, on December 9, 2011, Jones was found with a second firearm, a Beretta, model PX4Storm, .40 caliber pistol, during a police arrest warrant execution.
Court records reveal that Jones was convicted on or about January 22, 2008, for the possession with intent to distribute cocaine in Texas, a felony punishable by more than one year of incarceration. As a result, Jones was prohibited from possessing a firearm by both state and federal law.
The case was investigated by the FBI Violent Crime Task Force, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward J. Rivera prosecuted the case.
According to U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente, Jones’s actions demonstrate the importance of enforcing federal gun laws and holding accountable those who violate them.
Jones’s sentencing serves as a reminder that possessing a firearm as a convicted felon has serious consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente emphasized the need for the community to work together to prevent gun violence and keep neighborhoods safe. The New Orleans community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Jones is behind bars and will face the consequences of his actions.
