Abdul Robinson, Prison Contraband Scheme, United States Virgin Islands 2013

ST. CROIX, USVI – A former corrections officer has been handed an 18-month sentence for his role in a sordid prison contraband scheme and conflict of interest. Abdul Robinson, 39, was found guilty on both counts, with Chief District Court Judge Wilma A. Lewis imposing the stiff penalties.

Robinson, who resided in St. Croix at the time, pleaded guilty on September 20, 2016. According to court documents, he accepted a cellular telephone and $100 from an undercover agent on April 5, 2013, with the explicit intention of delivering the phone to an inmate at Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility. As a corrections officer, Robinson was expected to uphold the law, but his betrayal led to significant charges.

Judge Lewis ordered Robinson to serve six months for providing contraband in prison followed by one year for the territorial offense of conflict of interest. The sentences will run consecutively, with Robinson also being required to serve one year of supervised release upon completion of his prison term. A fine of $500 and a special assessment of $25 were also imposed.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) conducted the investigation into Robinson’s criminal activities. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alphonso G. Andrews, Jr., was responsible for the prosecution, ensuring justice was served in this instance of institutional corruption.

Robinson’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the importance of integrity within correctional facilities and the consequences faced by those who abuse their power for personal gain.

The community is left with a heightened awareness of the measures being taken to combat corruption within the prison system, while Robinson will now have to face the realities of his actions for years to come.
