EVERGREEN, AL – Clarence Edward Evers, Jr., a 53-year-old former technology teacher, has confessed to a horrifying pattern of abuse. Evers, also known as Bud Evers, pled guilty today to federal charges of producing child pornography, possessing child pornography, and traveling across international lines to engage in depraved sexual acts with minors. The case, brought by the Southern District of Alabama, reveals a predator who exploited vulnerable children in Thailand and brought the evidence back home.
Acting United States Attorney Steve Butler announced the guilty plea, detailing how Evers admitted to traveling to Thailand each summer to pay boys as young as thirteen for sexual acts. He also admitted to photographing these encounters. A particularly damning account came from a 15-year-old victim who reported receiving approximately $22 from Evers for sexual acts and witnessing Evers engaging with another boy. This initial report, stemming from Facebook communications, sparked the investigation that ultimately brought Evers to justice.
On April 1, 2015, federal agents executed a search warrant at Evers’ Evergreen home. Despite attempts to encrypt his electronic devices, investigators recovered a “substantial amount” of child pornography, including both videos and photographs depicting sexually explicit acts involving boys. Evidence revealed a long-standing pattern of activity, with Evers coordinating travel and communication with other men sharing similar predatory interests in Thailand. The investigation uncovered years of planned exploitation.
Evers faces a grim future. Production of child pornography carries a minimum 15-year prison sentence, potentially reaching 30 years, along with a $250,000 fine, lifetime supervision by the U.S. Probation Office, and restitution. The charge of traveling in foreign commerce with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct carries an even harsher penalty: up to 30 years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, lifetime supervision, and restitution. Possession of child pornography carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, $250,000 fine, lifetime supervision, and restitution.
The investigation was a collaborative effort led by the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Sean P. Costello and Maria E. Murphy, with support from Trial Attorney Jessica Urban of the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS). CEOS’s High Technology Investigative Unit provided crucial technical expertise. This case is a chilling reminder of the global reach of child exploitation and the dedication required to dismantle these networks.
This prosecution is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project, spearheaded by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, focuses on locating, apprehending, and prosecuting offenders, while simultaneously working to identify and rescue victims. Sentencing for Clarence Edward Evers, Jr. is scheduled for July 14, 2017, before Chief United States District Judge Kristi K. DuBose.
