Neiman Groce, 31, Sentenced to 18 Months for Wire Fraud in Vermont
A Poultney man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for his role in embezzling nearly $75,000 from a retirement plan while working at Rutland Plywood Corporation.
According to court documents, Neiman Groce, 31, was employed by Rutland Plywood Corporation between 2008 and 2012. During this time, Groce was promoted to Human Resources Director and was responsible for administering the company’s section 401(k) employee retirement plan.
In 2012, Groce began embezzling money from the retirement accounts of five former employees by forging their signatures on benefit plan withdrawal forms and faxing them to the company that managed the retirement plan. The forged forms directed the money to be electronically transferred to two bank accounts controlled by Groce.
Between June and November 2012, more than $75,000 in retirement plan funds were transferred into Groce’s accounts. Groce also stole an additional $3,000 from Rutland Plywood by forging and altering a series of company checks to make them payable to himself.
Groce pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in May and was sentenced to 18 months in prison by Chief U.S. District Judge Christina Reiss. Groce was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release following his release from prison and to pay restitution of nearly $75,000.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Vermont State Police. Groce is represented by Federal Public Defender Michael Desautels. The prosecutor is Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Waples.
