GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Joel Michael Max, a 30-year-old resident of Sisseton, South Dakota, has been meted out justice for his despicable acts of abusive sexual contact with a minor. The United States Attorney Ron Parsons announced that Max was sentenced to 120 months in federal prison on June 3, 2019, by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann.
Max’s sentence includes a subsequent 10 years of supervised release and an order to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. His predatory actions, which spanned from March 23, 2018, to June 2, 2018, were characterized as acts of intent to abuse, humiliate, harass, and degrade a child for Max’s own sexual gratification.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in conjunction with the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe’s Law Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy R. Jehangiri represented the prosecution in this case.
Upon conviction, Max was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, ensuring his incarceration begins immediately.
This sentence sends a strong message against sexual predators who prey on innocent children, underscoring the commitment of federal authorities to protect our youth from such heinous acts.
