Anthony Romeo Osuna, Meth Conspiracy, Oregon 2024

South Dakota – In a major blow to Oregon’s methamphetamine trade, 25-year-old Anthony Romeo Osuna, aka ‘Romeo’, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his role in a lucrative South Dakota meth conspiracy.

Osuna’s sentencing, which took place on April 15, 2024, follows a lengthy investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Worthington Police Department, and the Sioux Falls Police Department.

The evidence against Osuna was damning. In November 2019, a co-conspirator was arrested after a Worthington, Minnesota, police officer stopped a Nissan Armada and discovered approximately eleven pounds of methamphetamine hidden in a compartment, along with two firearms.

According to court documents, Osuna had loaded the methamphetamine into the vehicle in Oregon and instructed his co-conspirators to drive it to Minnesota, where they intended to distribute the drugs in both Minnesota and South Dakota. Meanwhile, Osuna remained in Oregon, continuing to sell narcotics.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Hodges prosecuted the case, which was indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2022. Osuna pleaded guilty on January 26, 2024.

Osuna’s 10-year sentence, which will be followed by five years of supervised release, sends a clear message to those involved in the trafficking of methamphetamine. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Osuna was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The South Dakota U.S. Attorney’s Office has made it clear that it will continue to crack down on those involved in the trafficking of illegal substances. This case is a prime example of the devastating consequences that individuals can face when they choose to engage in such activities.
