Carson Posey, Second-Degree Murder, District of Columbia 2020

A 24-year-old Washington D.C. man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the second-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend in Northwest Washington.

Carson Posey, 24, of Washington, D.C., was handed down the sentence yesterday in Superior Court for the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Shantal Hill, which occurred on April 15, 2020, in front of the Tyler House Apartments on the south side of 1200 North Capitol Street, Northwest.

Posey pleaded guilty on September 29, 2023, to one count of second-degree murder while armed. Superior Court Judge Michael O’Keefe also ordered Posey to serve five years of supervised release.

According to court documents, Posey and Hill walked out of the front of the apartment building following what appeared to be a heated argument involving a third person. Posey then shot Hill nine times in the legs, buttocks, and chest and fled the area.

Hill identified her assailant to responding police officers while aid was being provided on the scene. Hill also stated, “I [am] a single mother and I can’t die.” She died shortly after midnight on April 16, 2020.

In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith, of the Metropolitan Police Department, commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Criminal Investigations Division, Homicide Branch, of the Metropolitan Police Department.

They also commended the work of Assistant U.S. Attorney John Interrante, who prosecuted the case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office commended the bravery and dedication of the responding officers who helped bring the case to justice.

The sentencing comes as a relief to the community, who had been left shaken by the brutal killing. The case serves as a reminder that violence will not be tolerated in our city and that those who commit such crimes will face the full force of the law.
