Former CEO William James Davis of Community Action of Minneapolis (CAM) has been sentenced to 48 months in prison for embezzling over $380,000 from the non-profit organization. Davis, who pleaded guilty to all 16 counts against him, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Patrick J. Schiltz.
According to officials, Davis misused CAM’s funds for personal expenses, including airline tickets and a Caribbean cruise, while concealing these transactions from the organization’s board of directors. His son, Jordan Davis, was also convicted for his part in the fraud scheme.
The investigation into Davis’s activities was led by the FBI, alongside agencies such as the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, and the United States Department of Energy Office of the Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorneys Kimberly A. Svendsen and Amber M. Brennan prosecuted the case.
Davis served as CEO of CAM for 24 years, an organization that aimed to assist those living in poverty within Minneapolis. The funds were primarily sourced from federal grants administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce and the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Additionally, funding was received from CenterPoint Energy and Xcel Energy.
Acting U.S. Attorney Gregory G. Brooker emphasized the severity of Davis’s crimes, stating, ‘The sentence imposed today appropriately recognizes this defendant’s crimes.’ FBI Special Agent in Charge for the Minneapolis Division Richard T. Thornton echoed these sentiments, underscoring the commitment to justice and ferreting out such crimes.
William James Davis, 66, from Brooklyn Park, Minn., has been sentenced to 48 months in prison and two years of supervised release for conspiracy, fraud, and theft of public funds.
