FCI-Greenville Inmate Caught with Marijuana in Balloons

A shocking case of corruption within the Federal Correctional Institution in Greenville, Illinois, has been brought to light as Gregory Mason, a 27-year-old inmate, was sentenced to 8 months in prison for possession of contraband. This term must be served in addition to Mason’s current sentence, and he was also fined $100, with a $100 special assessment.

According to sources, the charge arose on December 20, 2014, when an officer monitoring the visiting room at FCI-Greenville observed Mason acting suspiciously. Immediate action was taken, and Mason was placed in a dry cell after his visit ended so that his bowel movements could be monitored. On December 22, 2014, Mason defecated out four balloons that contained marijuana.

The investigation was handled by the Bureau of Prisons’ Special Investigation Section, with Assistant United States Attorney Angela Scott assigned to the case. Mason was arraigned on August 13, 2015, and has since been held without bond.

The brazen move by Mason to smuggle marijuana into the prison raises questions about the effectiveness of security measures in place at FCI-Greenville. Despite the severity of the offense, many are left wondering how such a blatant attempt to smuggle contraband went undetected for so long.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle to combat corruption and contraband within the US prison system. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: Gregory Mason will be serving a significant amount of time for his actions.

James L. Porter, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced the sentencing, bringing closure to the case. The verdict is a clear message to those who would attempt to smuggle contraband into our prisons: you will be held accountable.
