LOS ANGELES, CA – In a major blow to the Golden State’s notorious cocaine trade, federal authorities today announced that Grace Hong, a 45-year-old Los Angeles resident, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in a large-scale cocaine trafficking operation.
According to court documents, Hong and his co-conspirators smuggled massive quantities of cocaine into the United States, generating millions of dollars in cash revenue.
The case, United States v. Hong, was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California and involved a complex web of money laundering and financial transactions.
Prosecutors alleged that Hong and his co-defendants, including Keith Canlapan and Simon Hong, laundered their illicit gains through a series of shell companies and bank accounts.
At sentencing, U.S. District Judge Christina A. Snyder noted that Hong‘s crimes had a devastating impact on communities across Southern California.
The investigation, led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, was a collaborative effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies and resulted in the seizure of over $10 million in cash and assets.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence of Hong‘s extensive cocaine trafficking network, which stretched from the streets of Los Angeles to major cities across the United States.
In addition to the 20-year prison sentence, Hong was ordered to forfeit over $5 million in illicit proceeds.
The sentencing marks a significant victory for law enforcement in their ongoing battle against the Golden State’s cocaine trade.
As one law enforcement official noted, ‘This case demonstrates our commitment to taking down major players in the cocaine trade and disrupting the flow of illicit drugs into our communities.’
The case is a reminder that those involved in cocaine trafficking will be held accountable for their crimes and face severe penalties.
