⏱ 2 min read

Robert D’Angelo Poteat, a 40-year-old convicted felon from the District of Columbia, was involved in a high-stakes traffic stop on December 22, 2025, at around 12:35 a.m. in the 2400 block of 14th Street, NW. Poteat was driving a pickup truck when Metropolitan Police Department officers stopped him for a lane violation. However, things took a turn when an officer spotted a firearm with an extended magazine in plain view on the passenger side floorboard, prompting Poteat to speed off at a high rate of speed.

About two hours later, officers found the truck parked in the 800 block of Princeton Place NW with Poteat unconscious in the driver’s seat. After establishing contact with Poteat, officers recovered a loaded .40-caliber Glock 23 with an extended, 29-round magazine from his waistband, and a 50-round drum magazine and a 15-round magazine from a cross-body satchel.

Poteat pleaded guilty on April 22, 2026, to possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. He was sentenced to 33 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. This was not Poteat’s first run-in with the law, as he had prior convictions for unlawful possession of a firearm in DC, including a 2015 case that resulted in a 24-month prison sentence.

The Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Washington worked together to bring Poteat to justice. The case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat firearm possession and violent crime in the District of Columbia.
