Felon Grabbed for Gun

Fort Thompson, South Dakota – Samuel Redwater, a Fort Thompson man, was handed down a 24-month sentence for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson.

According to court documents, Redwater, 22, was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 16, 2013, and pled guilty to the offense on March 28, 2013.

The charge stems from an incident on December 19, 2012, where Redwater knowingly possessed a firearm that had been previously shipped and transported in interstate and foreign commerce, having been previously convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.

Redwater was sentenced to 24 months of imprisonment by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on June 12, 2013. He was also handed down 2 years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The investigation into Redwater’s case was a collaborative effort between the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, and the Chamberlain City Police.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case, and Redwater was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after his sentencing.
