TRENTON, N.J. – In a shocking turn of events, a Trenton man has been sentenced to four years in prison for selling a semi-automatic rifle to an undercover officer.
Edwin Gaines, 59, previously pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in U.S. District Court. He was sentenced to 48 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Peter G. Sheridan.
According to court documents, on February 15, 2019, Gaines arranged to sell a Ruger .22 semi-automatic rifle and an extended magazine to an undercover officer. The officer was acting at the direction and supervision of law enforcement.
The transaction took place in the basement of a Trenton residence and was recorded using video and audio equipment provided by law enforcement. Gaines was paid with money provided by the authorities.
Gaines has a history of felony convictions, including murder in New Jersey Superior Court. In addition to his prison sentence, he was also sentenced to three years of supervised release.
Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig credited the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the New Jersey State Police, and the Trenton Police Department for their roles in the investigation.
The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Katie Lee of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Criminal Division in Trenton.
