Felon Sentenced to 46 Months for Gun Crime

BAD GUY BEHIND BARS: A North Charleston man is headed to federal prison after a string of violent incidents and a history of gun crime.

Da’Shawn Marquis Richards, 25, of North Charleston, was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon.

According to evidence presented to the court, Richards was wanted for murder and attempted murder in Charleston County in November 2021. When law enforcement officials arrested him on those charges, they found a loaded handgun with an extended magazine in his vehicle.

But that was just the beginning. On March 22, 2023, while out on bond for the murder and attempted murder charges, officers searched his car again and located another loaded handgun.

United States District Judge David C. Norton handed down the maximum sentence based on the applicable sentencing guideline range. Richards will also serve three years of court-ordered supervision after his release.

This case is part of the federal government’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the country. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the FBI Columbia Field Office, and the North Charleston Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Lietzow is prosecuting the case. The PSN program has been a key component in the federal government’s efforts to tackle violent crime and gun violence, with a focus on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities.
